Siemens' Dynamic Offices in Belgium

No fixed workplace, no personal archive, less space for paper and every night ensuring that your desk is completely empty: for those who work mostly away from the office this may not sound strange. The question is whether the formula of the dynamic office is also suitable for accountants? Siemens thinks it is.

Christine Huyge

When Siemens last year in June launched the concept of the dynamic office the five-man accounting and financial team that supports Siemens Real Estate was one of the test groups. The team shares with three other groups of employees a workspace with a total of 23 workstations. There are not enough desks for everyone but that is not necessary. A research shows that on average only 80% of the personnel spend their time in the office.

"When we arrive the morning we can freely choose our place," said Gregory Berk Mans of the accounting department. "The place you choose depends on the work to be done that day and the people you need to interact with. You punch in your PIN for the phone, open your laptop and you can start. All tables have wheels so we can move them around quickly if we want to meet. "

Clean desk

Initially we had some problems with the clean desk principle. That is irrevocably linked to the dynamic office: the next morning someone else may sit at the desk you occupy today, so you should leave a clean space every evening. "As controllers we sometimes spend several days working with the same physical files. Some find it a waste of time to file everything at the end of the day and then the next morning again retrieve the same files.
